Negative Calorie Foods
The negative calorie foods include mainly:
- vegetables such as: asparagus, beets, broccoli, green cabbage, carrots and cauliflower;
- fruits such as: apples, blueberries, cantaloupes, and cranberries.
The surplus of vitamins stored in these foods will create a reaction in your digestive process that is said to lead to weight loss.
The name itself may be a bit misleading. No food has zero calories. The concept hinges on the net result of eating these negative calorie foods. The idea behind this method of dieting is that if you eat, say, an apple which contains 50 calories, it would take a certain amount of energy for your body to process all of the nutrients and vitamins within the apple. In doing so you would burn more than 50 calories. Now, the amount of calories you would burn is dependent on the individual. Some say that you could burn as much as 150% of the total calories found within the apple. The result is that you would burn a net of 25 calories per apple you eat.
As you eat any type of food your body produces enzymes to break down the calories contained in the food. As with the Negative Calorie Diet, some foods are believed to actually produce more enzymes than needed to break down the calories contained in the food itself. Is this discovery truly a tremendous breakthrough? It very well may be, if research is conducted and confirms that these extra enzymes produced in digestion are in some way transported into the bloodstream.
The negative calorie diet does benefit the metabolism, but people should eat such foods as a snack and not base their diet completely on them. There is no scientific proof that this diet actually works. Negative calorie foods alone may not be enough to create permanent and satisfactory weight loss. Further research will establish how effective this approach is to permanent weight loss.
